Athletic Global Assessment

Reviewing game and match tape will only reveal your superficial performance. The Sports Science Lab Athletic Global Assessment begins with an athletic body assessment to identify inefficiencies and imbalances that are invisible to the human eye. This assessment allows our team of sports scientists to quantify your athleticism by analyzing your physical structure and mechanics using our 3-D motion and kinematic analysis, surface EMG muscle response, and cardiopulmonary and VO2Max analysis. These extremely precise assessments will help to uncover areas of weakness, prevent injuries, and improve performance.

All athletes know that their performance doesn’t just depend on their physical condition, it also requires a sharp and focused mind. The Sports Science Lab Athletic Neurocognitive Assessment uses cutting-edge technology like 3D sports simulation technology and neurotechnology to analyze your cognitive ability. By better understanding how you recognize, process, interpret and respond to stimuli specific to your sport, we can create a custom roadmap to improve your motor control, coordination, attention, concentration, impulsivity, focus, and reaction time, making you a better-rounded athlete and improving performance.

These assessments allow us to easily determine areas of imbalance, pain or weakness and design training programs uniquely tailored to each athlete’s needs.

On-Site Athletic Trainer Coverage

SSL’s experts have extensive experience working with professional athletes and now strive to bring that experience and expertise to athletes of all levels to help them excel in their sport. Our team is led by our head athletic trainer Matthew Reicher, who developed an injury prevention protocol for the MLS team New York Red Bulls, which led to some of the lowest number of non-contact soft-tissue injuries per team in MLS since 2013.

SSL provides On-Site Athletic Trainer coverage on a full-time or as needed basis, including traveling with the team for home and away games. SSL’s AT program serves as a viable option for schools that are looking to outsource their athletic coverage.

Our scientific methodology includes a full global athletic assessment at the start of pre-season, which provides our team with a breakdown of high risk vs. low risk athletes in terms of propensity to injuries. Based off the information from the assessment, SSL experts are able to analyze the data based off each athlete’s imbalances or inefficiencies. This information is vital for an athletic program’s strength and conditioning staff , as it allows them to approach their training differently based on the results. Our team recently worked with a high school football program, in which 40% of their players who were flagged as high risk suffered an injury in the first month of coverage. This goes to show the effectiveness and accuracy of the data from the assessment, which is vital to the team’s program.

The data also shows our experts, which athletes have recurring injuries or those who are not fully recovered from a current injury. This information allows our athletic trainers to address these injuries in-house, before they get worse over the course of a season. The data from SSL’s global assessment is extremely accurate in determining which athletes are prone to injuries.

Teams that we provide Athletic Trainer coverage to also have access to the Sports Science lab, including all recovery modalities, top-notch physical therapy and chiropractic treatment. Our certified athletic trainers have a significant track record in keeping athletes injury free, while providing the utmost care for rehabilitation. Our trainers will also educate the athletes on how to rehab minor injuries, before they turn into major injuries.

Our trainers employ SSL’s proprietary protocol, which has been proven to improve performance and reduce injuries. Our injury prevention protocols allow the athletes to stay on the field for longer periods at a time and rehab them back to sport-specific movements. Our trainers will be on hand for every practice and game, which in turn will improve overall player health. Most importantly, head injuries are on the rise in football especially, and our trainers use the gold standard in evaluating concussions. Our trainers will effectively communicate with coaches on any issues/injuries that arise and provide a targeted plan to get them back on the field. Overall, the goal of this program is to provide a safe environment for schools across the Northeast region, while reducing injuries at the same time.

Young Outliers: IQ + Athleticism

The SSL team uses a combination of brain training and specialized training to develop a foundation for sport-specific preparation and to optimize athleticism. The program develops key aspects of athleticism beyond the children’s sport, from the body’s core to the extremities. This program aims to develop a good foundation for sports, including multi-directional movement skills, balance, agility, vertical and lateral movement, muscular endurance and strength, both aerobic and anaerobic energy systems, increases rotational inertia, while reducing the risk of injury.

In addition to physical training, timing and accuracy are important features of athleticism. Fast reaction times and ability to make decisions can be critical during a game and can make the difference between victory and loss. The SSL uses brain training, which combines principles of music, sports and neuroplasticity, to improve focus, concentration, coordination and timing. Studies have shown that neurotechnology improves the efficiency of the brain’s timing, which, in turn, leads to an improved ability to process, store and retrieve information, as well as better attention, thinking and language skills. The SSL therefore develops these skills in addition to physical training to ensure that children realize their full athletic potential.

Benefits to children and young athletes

5 Tool Player Optimization

In order to play at the next level, Baseball players need to perfect the 5 tools that every scout looks for.You must be able to hit for average, hit for power. You must be able to throw, field, and run the bases with efficiency. Not having all 5 tools can prevent you from making your team, or getting a scholarship. At the Sports Science Lab, we condition baseball players to optimize their 5 tools.

Hitting for average:

In order to hit for average, hitters must have eye hand coordination, depth perception, and visual acuity

  • By training these sensory skills with state of the art brain training technology, hitters are able to put the bat on the ball with more consistency- slowing the game down so that 95 looks like 85

Hitting for power

  • In order to hit for power, hitters must have explosive rotational strength driven from the lower half of the body
  • By training the core and lower body with isoinertial technology, hitters learn to transmit energy from their lower half for maximum rotational torque
  • In the batter’s box, this translates to driving the baseball into the gaps with backspin and lift

Fielding:

  • Fielding is about the proper footwork and eye hand coordination
  • Most of the time, footwork and eye hand coordination breaks down when players lose focus because they are tired, tight, and sore
  • That’s why all of our workouts begin and end with footwork and eye hand coordination
  • By training these two skills at the same time, baseball players develop physical and mental endurance so that in later innings fielding becomes involuntary

Throwing:

  • Scouts want to see that you can throw the baseball with accuracy and velocity
  • Postural issues and shoulder instability can prevent baseball players from maintaining velocity and accuracy throughout the season
  • We incorporate postural exercises and shoulder strengthening into every workout so that come scout day or playoff time- your arm is just as live as the first week of your season

Running:

  • Running is a tool that can give you a real competitive edge as a baseball player.
  • This tool can make or break you advance throughout your career.
  • A lot of baseball players lose speed while running because they can’t run in a straight line
  • At the SSL we train efficiency in running mechanics so that you run a 60 yard dash and not a 62/63 yard dash.
  • We use a combination of Whole Body Vibration, Sports Simulation, and the quick board to enhance sprinting mechanics and fast twitch muscle fibers responsible for speed

Sensory Performance Training

The Sensory Station is a cutting-edge technology that uses principles of neuroscience to assess and train an athlete’s sensory system and improve performance. Coordination between the sensory and motor systems is essential for athletic performance. An athlete’s ability to assess his or her environment, estimate distance and perceive objects in the peripheral vision can make the difference between winning and losing.

The Sensory Station assesses ten visual and sensory-motor skills, including depth perception, eye mobility, peripheral and central vision, reaction time and eye/hand coordination. The station also measures the speed at which visual information is acquired and how quickly attention can shift from near to far objects. These measurements are then compared to a large database, which includes information from athletes of all levels and abilities, to identify any weaknesses that may exist.

The SSL team of experts analyzes the results and devises a training program to improve any deficiencies. Studies have shown that this science-based approach to visual training not only improves sports performance, but can also reduce the risk of concussions. The SSL uses this advanced technology to ensure that each athlete reaches their full potential and reduces the risk of injury.

Benefits to Athletes:

  • Better hand-eye coordination
  • Faster reaction time
  • Better depth perception
  • Improved performance
  • Prevent injuries

Brain Training:

The Interactive Metronome (IM) is a cutting-edge performance optimizing technology that combines principles of music, sports and neuroplasticity to improve focus, concentration, coordination and timing. It can also be used to improve language processing, reading and math fluency, and control of impulsivity/aggression. Correct timing and coordination are crucial to athletic success when even the smallest errors in timing can make a difference between victory and loss. The IM provides a training program that involves matching various motor activities with the beat of a metronome while measuring the timing accuracy to within milliseconds. This technology improves connectivity and communication between the different task-oriented structures in the brain, resulting in a better ability to adapt one’s movements to specific conditions, tasks and environments, making the coordination between the mind and the muscles easier, and as a consequence, more effective.

This unique technology is used by hundreds of professional athletes such as professional golfers Vijay Singh and Glen Day to gain mental precision in timing and the transmission of messages along the neural pathways, effectively gaining a competitive edge. In addition to these athletes, IM has been used by many university and professional sports teams to improve performance, including: Miami Heat (NBA), Miami Dolphins (NFL), Florida Panthers (NHL), University of Notre Dame, Syracuse University, University of North Carolina and the University of Miami.

Benefits to athletes

  • Improved timing of movements
  • Improved accuracy of movements
  • Better decision-making
  • Faster reaction time
  • Better competitive edge

5 Tool Optimization Program for Basketball Players

In order to play at the next level, Basketball players need to perfect the 5 tools that every scout looks for. It is crucial for basketball players to possess agility, explosiveness, reaction time, court awareness, and hand-eye coordination. At the Sports Science Lab, we train basketball players to optimize their 5 tools.

Reaction time + Awareness:

Basketball players need to anticipate where players will be and react to their movements on the court (Open lanes, back door cuts, slash, defensive slips).

  • By incorporating state-of-the-art sensory and brain training technology the game will become that much easier for the player.
  • Making decisions in crunch time is what separates the stars from average players.
  • Training these sensory skills will only enhance the decision making process.

Hand-Eye Coordination:

Basketball players must have the ability to react when the ball comes their way. The split-second decisions a player makes can make or break a game.

  • Having soft-hands will allow the player to be a great defensive player, in terms of stealing the ball due to rapid hand movements.
  • Soft hands also enhance the player’s ability to catch difficult passes and ball control while dribbling.
  • At SSL, we use sensory and brain training technologies to improve hand-eye coordination and ball control.

Power/ Speed/ Explosiveness:

The ability to drive to the basket passed a defender, stepping through the lane for a steal, getting back on defense, full court presses, fast breaks, rebounding, shooting, etc are all fundamental skills basketball players need.

  • At SSL, we use isoinertial technology to strengthen both the eccentric and concentric part of the muscle.
  • Isointertial technology works by applying the same force in the concentric and eccentric movements, thus improving power, speed, and explosiveness.

Agility + Lateral Quickness:

Basketball players need to be able to move their feet swiftly and quickly on defense (pick and roll, charges, blocking the baseline, steals, screens, etc).

  • SSL utilizes the quick board agility trainer, which is scientifically proven to increase agility, quickness, and reaction.
  • The Quick Board is the only device that provides the capability and method to test + train lower extremity coordination, which can reduce exposure to injuries.

Mobility/Recovery:

Basketball is a very high intensity sport, in which it is played on a hard surface that puts a lot of pressure/impact on the joints, hips, knees, and ankles. It is imperative to recover from physical activity to reduce the wear and tear on the body. This will reduce the risk of getting injured, and allow the player perform at their best.

  • SSL utilizes cutting-edge recovery devices such as pneumatic compression devices, cryotherapy, and electrical stimulation machines.
  • Using these devices pre and post-game will optimize the recovery of the athlete and provide them with fresh legs for the next game.
